What makes the shaving soaps and shaving creams made by “The Gentlemen’s Quarter” better than the other brands ?

Right off the bat I would say, “ It’s all about the ingredients!”  It’s what set us apart from other maker’s of personal skin care products.  We like to use ingredients that have names that you can recognize, like cold-pressed Virgin Olive Oil, Mango Butter, and Coconut oil.

So What.....

It may not make any difference to you now, but many people are tired of the mass production of skin care products with an ingredient list that requires a manual to decipher the contents.  We are all learning to be a little more health conscious these days and realize the importance of good health practices and what it means to our overall sense of well being.  Our society yearns for a time when things were a little more simple and not so complicated.  Keeping this in mind, it seemed a good practice for how we make our soaps and shaving creams.

Do you use any animal products in your soaps ?

We do not use any animal products in our bath soaps or our shaving soaps, however our shaving cream does contain Grade A Kosher Tallow along with other quality oils, but pure Tallow gives the shaving cream a beautiful texture that cannot be developed using only plant oils; besides I enjoy a good steak every now & then and have always owned a fine pair of leather boots!  Seems a bit hypocritical to not use it.   We do not use any pork or lard ingredients in any of our products.  Here at TGQ we strive to use only the best ingredients and the end result is a product that can claim Quality as it’s bottom line.

So you also make Bath Soaps ?

Yes, Colleen Hurley is a skilled cold process soap maker and has been making and selling her Fine Herbal Bath soaps at the Tamarack www.tamarackwv.com located in Beckley, West Virginia for over 3 years now.   Our pure, natural bath soaps are made from the finest quality vegetable oils and butters available, Infused with herbs and the finest teas and spice from around the world to give warm natural colors and textures.   All of our bath soaps are superfat which means that the soaps were made with lower amounts of lye so not all of the skin loving oils were turned into soap but remain behind to soothe and moisturize your skin, with a gentle cleansing lather.  We do not use any artificial colors.

What about Aftershaves or Colognes, do you have any available ?

As of this writing we currently have Aftershaves and Colognes in development, but not ready for sale.  We are very excited about our test results thus far and you can be sure that when the product is ready for sale, it has been used and tested by Men just like you who have given their thumbs up first.

What scents do you have available ?

At this time we carry only a small line of scents using mostly essential oils and some cosmetic grade fragrance oils.  I like to think that all of our shaving soaps and shaving creams are decidedly Masculine; you will not find any powdered lilac or tropical mango fruit here, after all this is ”The Gentlemen’s Quarter”.   We do offer a fine selection of bath soaps favored by both Men and Women in the following notes or families of notes.  Woods, citrus....orange, lemon, lime, earthy, musk, spice, warm, clean, brisk just to name a few.

Notes...what are notes ? Weren’t we talking about Bath Soap......

Notes are used to describe the strength or types of fragrance the same way that notes are used to create a melody.  In the same way that a harmonious song is written, a good blend of essential oils or fragrance oils will contain bottom notes, a middle heart and a fleeting top note.  This is what creates a top of the line Custom Blend scent and we here at “The Gentlemen’s Quarter” are proud to offer you a select line of Custom Blends available no where else.

What is the difference between Essential oils and Fragrance oils ?

Essential oilscome from the world of Nature.   The essential oil is the “essence” or life’s blood of the plant from which it was taken.   The most common method of extraction is steam distillation using various parts of plants, roots, grasses, trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs.  Essential oils are known to have healing and soothing qualities to the skin and to the spirit.  There are many scriptural references to the use of plants and herbs in the Bible, their uses are written of in the ancient hieroglyphs of Egypt, and are the root of eastern medicine.

Fragrance oils  - are made by man, they are synthetic copies of what nature has to offer and the quality and strength of their scents vary widely between companies, trust me.....we have tried several and they are not created equal.  After several cheapie smelling fragrance failures we have established a relationship with a company that sells only Top Shelf Quality, cosmetic grade fragrance oils.

Do I need to take care of my bath soap in a way different from store bought?

Yes you do.  Store bought soaps are high in detergents and have no natural occurring glycerin content, most have been milled and are very hard.  Cold process soaps have a high glycerin content that occurs naturally during the soap making process, and are rich in additional skin loving oils created by superfatting the soap.  This means your soap is softer than store bought soap and is a natural product.  Your bath soap will last a lot longer if it is kept in a proper soap dish, where air is able to circulate around the bar and dry between uses.  Please do not leave your soap sitting in water.

If you have purchased additional bars of bath soap, they are best stored away from humidity (do not store under the bathroom sink) or severe changes in temperature (do not store in the garage).  The perfect place is a linen closet full of sheets and towels or where you hang your own clothes or a chest of drawers.  Take the soaps out of the plastic bag they came in, you can leave the product label on or off and place them on the shelf of the linen closet or in the clothing drawer.  You will find that the bath soaps will leave a soft lingering fresh scent in your clothing and sheets.  You can cut them in half and place them in several drawers.

The scent will be the most fresh if used within 6 months, but many times I have used soap that is over a year old and when it becomes wet, the scent will unfold and freshen once again.   The soap itself will last for two or three years if stored properly.

Does the Bath soap have a good lather ?

Ohhhhh; yes indeed,  I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the rich, creamy lather that comes from a bar of quality handmade bath soap.  For the best lather use your favorite wash cloth or a scrubbie to create rich moisturizing suds.

How long does a bar of Bath soap last ?

As the saying goes “your mileage will vary” based on a number of outside factors like how many people are in the house using the same bar of soap and whether or not the soap is kept in a proper soap dish so that it is able to air out between uses.  On average a bar of handmade cold process bath soap should last about one month.  If there is only one person in the house the soap should easily last 6 weeks or longer.....it just depends on the mileage

What about the Shaving soaps and Shaving creams; do they have a good lather for Shaving ?

If we ever learned anything at “The Gentlemen’s Quarter”,  we’ve learned to make a shaving soap or a shaving cream with a good lather, even a “great” lather!   We also learned that other things needed to be included like clays, to retain a higher water content in the lather that helps to soften your beard, and yet another type of clay for superior slip, so your razor glides along your handsome jaw line, instead of skipping and scraping away causing razor burn and irritating your skin.   We’ve also added generous amounts of goats milk and shea butter for the moisture and aloe vera known to heal and soothe your skin, to achieve a close, and comfortable shave that leaves your skin feeling soothed and moisturized and ready to face the rigors of the day........plain and simple.

Do you offer advice on skin care problems ?

No....we do not.  Although we are happy to suggest that you speak with your family doctor or a dermatologist in your area,  and there are many good and informative articles written by skin care specialists to help you with your skin care questions, that are only a click away on the internet.

(Top)
Will your soaps work for me if I have Sensitive skin ?

The most likely answer is .....yes.  We do suggest that you stick to the scent blends that are comprised of essential oils rather than fragrance based.  If your skin is hypersensitive and depending on your needs be it for shaving or bathing we do suggest that you try our unscented soaps first, if this poses no problem with repeated use, move to the essential oil blends.

Do you have soaps made specifically for people with sensitive skin ?

As of this writing we have a line of shaving products that are under development for those of you with sensitive skin.  And as always before the product comes to the shelf it will have been tested by Men who have sensitive skin problems just like yours.  When we receive a thumbs up for a shave ready product we will bring it to you posthaste.

Do you have any other scents available other than the ones listed ?

We are always working behind the scenes to create new custom scent blends for your pleasure and as they are developed and tested they will be added to the list of current available scents.   The scent choices you see listed are the available items for purchase.

What about Shampoos or Conditioners ?

We do have future plans to add a complete line of skin care products in our Custom Blends range.
